CNR was the third race NM1 completed as a crew following Winter Heads and Emma Sprints. We all felt that our technique and teamwork have massively improved, and this race was potentially the one that we took away the most from. First race was against Sidney Sussex, in which the Clare boat started the race with a few boat lengths ahead with a strong start. On the other hand, the start of the second race, against Selwyn, was not as clean as it was during the first race, and Selwyn boat was ahead of our crew. Despite the bad start, we kept our head in the boat and pushed hard, overtaking Selwyn just before the finish line. The semi-final was against FaT NM1, which we have beaten previously in our first race of Emma Sprints. FaT was ahead of us, but we were chasing until the end, closing down the gap a lot, turning the race into what we could have definitely won, had the race been slightly longer. We may not be the crew that won CNR, but the crew gave everything and I am sure that everyone in the crew is pleased with what we have done.

Dan Lewis reports:

Due to the early start and the two boat rule NM2 were tragically both sleep deprived and underprepared in the run up to the Clare Novice Regatta. Despite this the row up to the start point seemed to signal the emergence of a new and coordinated NM2. One that miraculously features all eight of its rowers catching together. Oh what a feeling. This combined with the haphazard rowing of our competitors just ahead of gave us a sense of optimism coming up to the Fen Ditton starting point. However, in the actual race our opponents found a rhythm and energy that propelled them along the Cam whilst we were catching enough crabs to simultaneously end world hunger and NM2's chance of victory. Despite this problematic beginning our spirit remained and we managed to hold on for the rest of the race without slipping further behind.
