Race abandoned: high winds, waves and sinking crews

Will Kerr-Muir reports:

After having rowed up from Furnivall to our marshalling point near the Bandstand, we were already having to bail water. Apparently we hadn't even rowed through what were said to be the worst of the conditions, between Chiswick and Barnes. After a bit of a delay the first 45 crews started racing and we had a prime viewing spot to watch the first few sinkings and efforts to bail while on the move. Although we were keen to row the course, given the conditions and having seen rowers being pulled from a submerged eight opposite us, it was somewhat of a relief that the race was called off.
