Cambridge Winter Head to Head 2012
Saturday 21st January
1st Women's VIII
Bow: Becky Fogg 2: Rachel Boyd 3: Grace Campbell 4: Moos Peeters 5: Jess Denman 6: Jess Palmer 7: Claire Watkins Stroke: Clare Thakker Cox: Esther Momcilovic
2nd fastest W1 in a time of 16 minutes and 7 seconds (Leg 1: 7:48, Leg 2: 8:19)
It was a strange one. The only W1 that beat us is Caius, and they happened to be the crew not only chasing us in Bumps, but chasing us today. As such, we came out of this race with a much more negative view of how things had gone than we should have had. I'm not going to say what we need to improve - our post-race chat had enough of that! What I will say, is that we lost to them by 37 seconds, but beat the crew we're chasing in Bumps by 1 minute 15. This is a great way to start the term. We have pressure from behind, but oh-so-much incentive to push off them onto Tit Hall in front. And even better, we have so much more speed to come...

Well, nice work guys! Two reasonably speedy times, which we can be particularly proud of in light of the lack of outings beforehand. The first race had the advantage of the tailwind, and Matt's handy reminders for length really helped us make good progress down the Reach. Once we'd got over the surprise of hitting race pace going downstream from the Railway Bridge (a pretty unique experience in Cam racing), we easily overtook the double ahead of us and made good progress on the Cantabs eight in front of them. The return leg was trickier, due largely to a combination of tiredness and a headwind: we fell slightly short of our rate 34 target for most of it. The length generally held, though, in spite of a conspicuous lack of reminder calls from me, and I reckon we have the right to be proud of our swanky pots. (Matt's got them, by the way, if you didn't pick them up.)
